FCWMD
FCWMD-Sponsored Topical Meetings

The largest activity of the Fuel Cycle and Waste Management Division is sponsoring a series of recurrent topical meetings. Currently all five FCWMD topical meetings are on the ANS base calendar of events, i.e., they have a long-standing successful history. We also co-sponsor two recurring topical meetings with other divisions.

GLOBAL 200X
Periodicity: Odd numbered years since 1993
Location: rotates among North American, Asian and European sites
Co-sponsors: AESJ, ENS, local section
Last meeting: Paris, September 2001
http://www.cea.fr/conferences/global2001/index.htm
Next meeting: New Orleans, LA, November 10-13, 2003
http://fcwmd.ans.org/global2003/
GLOBAL 2005 scheduled for Eastern Asia
Typical size: 400-600 attendees; ~300 papers
The GLOBAL series of international conferences covers future nuclear energy systems with emphasis on their associated advanced fuel cycles. The conferences encourage submission of papers on new nuclear systems that are in various stages of conceptualization, research, development, demonstration and early application. Reviews and discussion of significant national decisions and policies affecting the future of nuclear energy comprise a recurring theme. These national reviews could include progress on establishing national waste repositories, requirements for an acceptable nonproliferation regime for an advanced nuclear fuel cycle and national plans for expanding nuclear energy production.
International High-Level Radioactive Waste Management Conference
Periodicity: Odd numbered years
Location: Las Vegas, NV
Co-sponsors: DOE, UNLV, previously ASCE was main sponsor
Last meeting: April/May 2001
Next meeting: April 13-17, 2003
http://www.ans.org/meetings/
Typical size: 300-500 attendees; ~200 papers
The International High-Level Radioactive Waste Management Conference has been a geologic repository meeting with a focus on the Yucca Mountain Project. The emphasis of the meeting has been changed recently to gain a more international perspective. The technical scope includes high-level waste characterization, packaging, modeling and performance as well as repository modeling and performance. The ANS manages this conference in part as a service to the Department of Energy. The Organizing and Program Committees are diverse, with members representing many different professional organizations.
SPECTRUM 200X
Periodicity: Even numbered years
Location: Rotates amongst 5 states
Co-sponsors: DD&R Division, DOE, local section, DOE site contractor
Last meeting: Chattanooga, TN, September 2000
Next meeting: Reno, NV, August 4-8, 2002
http://www.ans.org/spectrum/
Typical size: ~300 attendees; ~200 papers
The SPECTRUM series of meetings focuses on low-level, transuranic and mixed waste from the nuclear fuel cycle and legacy defense production activities. Papers on spent nuclear fuel and high-level nuclear waste are discouraged, although there have been a limited number of sessions on these topics if they have particular local interest. SPECTRUM was set up to rotate among the DOE sites with major environmental management programs: Savannah River, Hanford, Oak Ridge, Rocky Flats, and Idaho. The DOE Office of Environmental Management is the principal customer for the meeting. Technology development for waste management has been emphasized.
International Conference on LWR Fuel Performance
Periodicity: Even numbered years
Location: Variable
Co-sponsors: MSTD, ENS, local section
Last meeting: Park City, UT, April 2000
Next meeting: Orlando, FL, September 2004 (tentative)
Typical size: >200 attendees; ~100 papers
This conference focuses on the latest developments in LWR fuel performance, including improved fuel designs and in-core management schemes. The meeting now alternates with the European Top Fuel conference, which is held in odd-numbered years. FCWMD alternates with the Materials Science and Technology Division as the primary sponsor of the LWR Fuel Performance Conference.
DOE Spent Nuclear Fuel and Fissile Materials Management
Periodicity: Even numbered years
Location: Variable
Co-sponsors: DOE, local section
Last meeting: San Diego, CA, June 2000
Next meeting: Charleston, SC, September, 2002
http://www.ans.org/meetings/
Typical size: ~200 attendees; ~100 papers
This series comprises two related mini-conferences that are collocated. The DOE spent fuel portion covers the challenges inherent in managing the 200+ types of spent fuel. The fissile materials management portion focuses primarily on the fissile materials disposition programs for excess plutonium and highly enriched uranium. Every other conference is typically embedded within a national ANS meeting.
